DEPARTMENT OF SPECIAL GIFTED AND TALENTED EDUCATION

DEPARTMENT OF SPECIAL GIFTED AND TALENTED EDUCATION

Historical Background

The Department of Education for the Gifted and Talented started in 1987/1988 session as the fifth department of the School of Special Education of the college. The programme was initiated by Dr. T. C. Obani who was then the Dean of the school. Having successfully established the programme, he became the pioneer head.

The department started with only three students. As time went on, students’ enrollment increased to ten, twenty six, fifty, hundred and fifty and presently, about six hundred. Since the department was established, she has been able to graduate about two thousand and four hundred highly trained NCE teachers for the gifted education programme in different subject areas. A good number of our graduates have gained admissions to many universities, while most of them have also been employed as teachers in different schools.

The department currently has five highly trained qualified academic staff.

Philosophy and Objectives of the Department

The programmes of the ordinary schools do not offer enough challenges to the gifted and talented to learn to their optimum level because this group of children approach the teaching-learning situations with styles and rates different from those of the average children. Their problems and special needs though not readily obvious, ought to be recognized, understood and appropriate educational arrangements made to challenge their interests and facilitate their developments both cognitively and psychologically to meet their special needs.

The National Policy on Education NPE of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (2004) makes it mandatory that equal educational opportunities should be given to all children, irrespective of their differences. The NPE has also recognized the special place the gifted and talented occupy in national development as future scientists, original creators and efficient functionaries; hence, it directs that educational provisions commensurate with their superior cognitive abilities be made in the interest of the nation’s economic and technological development. All these, necessitate the inclusion of education for the gifted and talented in our education system.

Classroom Structure

The department has three classrooms. Two of the classrooms have the capacity to accommodate one hundred and twenty students each while the remaining one can accommodate about three hundred students. These classrooms are well furnished; in fact, one of the classrooms is equipped with an interactive board.

Laboratories and Workshops

The department has access to two computer laboratories (the College Computer Centre and the Computer Laboratory in N. R. C. D.). The College Computer Centre has the capacity for thirty (30) students while the National Resource Centre for the Disabled (N. R. C. D.) can accommodate fifty (50) students. To compliment these facilities, the college management has procured some equipment that will enable the department set up a standard resource room in the next one year.
