DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION FOR LEARNERS WITH HEARING IMPAIRMENT

HISTORICAL BACKGROUND

The Department of Education for learners with Hearing Impairment is a department in the school of Special Education. The unit was floated in 1977 and became a full department between 1979 and 1980.

PHILOSOPHY

The department was established to train skilled teachers who will be special teachers for the hearing impaired students. 

The department admits both the hearing and hearing impaired students (Deaf) for three year programme of Nigeria Certificate of Education. These students under trained and seasoned special educators, are trained using appropriate skills, and  abilities for assessing and detecting hearing disorders in children and attending to their learning and social problems, thereby making them to be self reliant and also contribute their quota to national development.

OBJECTIVES

According to the National Policy on Education (1989) clamoring for formal education for all regardless of disability. Therefore, the need to train, educate, and rehabilitate the hearing impaired becomes expedient. Other objective of the department include;

a.      Training of teachers who may become educational audiologist in various communities.

b.     Standing as consultant to various schools for the deaf.

c.      Training the society on how to communicate with the hearing impaired in the population

d.     Rehabilitation of the deaf and Hard of Hearing.

NOTABLE ACHIEVEMENTS

1.     The department has succeeded in admitting and training more deaf students than ever.

2.     The audiology clinic is now well equipped with latest equipment

3.     Till now general audiology screening is been given to all newly admitted students.

4.     The audiology clinic also attends to individual and referrals with hearing difficulties for the purpose of screening and rehabilitation.

5.     More awareness is given to the teaching and training of total communication which is the deaf students language.

6.     Lectures have also succeeded in writing relevant text books.

 

PROJECTED ACHIEVEMENT

1.     In the nearest futures attempt is been geared towards making total communication a language for all.

2.     The department also intend to float a mobile audiological services.

This mobile clinic will be for schools and market places at the beginning.
