DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION FOR LEARNERS WITH INTELLECTUAL DISABILITIES

MISSION

 

To produce outstanding professional teachers suitable forprovision of sound and overall services and care for persons       with intellectual disabilities.

VISION

i.     To be leading trainers of teachers with genuine interest in the        care and teaching of persons with intellectual disabilities.

ii.    To be core information providers to the community on salient        issues bordering on birth, management and independence of        persons with intellectual disabilities.

iii.    To promote access to current practices in the training of       teachers for and education of persons with intellectual disabilities through the encouragement of further studies and    attendance of local and international workshops, conferences     and seminars.

iv.    To regularly undertake researches into modern trends on     peculiar needs of persons with intellectual disabilities.

PHILOSOPHY

The National Policy of Education (1981) (revised 2004) and the   Universal Basic Education (UBE) advocate equal educational opportunities for all Nigerian Children irrespective of any limitations.  Consequent upon this development, there is a need to develop a curriculum to produce teachers and other types of personnel who may be         involved in the education and care of learners with intellectual disabilities (SID).

Training the learners with intellectual disabilities as much as possible to lead independent life is the essence for making educational provisions for them.

 

OBJECTIVES

i.     To produce special education teachers for learners with intellectual         disabilities.

 

ii.      To provide the student-teachers with appropriate knowledge, skills and         attitude needed for screening, identifying, assessing and evaluating the         special needs of the intellectually disabled in order to provide appropriate         teaching for them.

 

iii.     To equip the student-teachers with necessary preliminary skills for       assisting the intellectually disabled live independent life as much as possible.

 

BRIEF HISTORY OF THE DEPARTMENT

The department of Education for Learners with Intellectual Retardation is one of the Departments in the School of Special Education. It was established in 1978 to produce Special Teachers with preliminary, but in depth knowledge of screening, identifying, evaluating, caring, educating, training, prevention and management of persons with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities.

Presently, the department has twelve (7) academic staff. The current students population is eight hundred and twenty five  (825).

The facilities available include two lecture halls, one classroom and a child assessment and guidance clinic.

The department parades a team of highly skilled professionals in the field of education for learners with intellectual disabilities.  They are all members of relevant professional bodies like Nigerian Association of Special Education Teachers, Teachers’ Registration Council, National Council for Exceptional Children, and so on.

On staff capacity development, the lecturers in the department are on PH.D programmes in different Universities in Nigeria.  They attend conferences, workshops and seminars periodically and have singly and jointly authored many book on special education and related issues.  They all have publications in several academic journals locally and internationally.

STUDENTS ACTIVITIES

The department has a total student population of eight hundred and twenty five students comprising of 200 and 300 Level students.  The students have an association called National Association of students for the Education of the Intellectually Disabled (NASEID).  The body is run by a democratically elected members of executives.  The focus of the association is to see to the welfare of its members, promote cordial relationship between staff and students of the department and organize academic and social programmes for its members.

DEPARTMENT’S ACHIEVEMENTS

The department has successfully promoted good relationship with other departments in the School of Special Education and the College in general.  It has annually turned out graduates with sound minds and high sense of judgement.  These graduates have been productively employed by governmental and non-governmental bodies within and outside the shores of Nigeria.  They have exhibited high interest in the education and care of persons with Intellectual disabilities as reflected in their crave for higher studies in this field.

The department has always functioned as the frontline provider of information through conferences, seminars and workshops on current developments in the area of special education.  The department has always encouraged staff on further studies, especially Ph.D programmes and the department is pleased with the progress reports it is receiving from its staff.

The department provides rehabilitation services to persons with Intellectual disabilities through the Child Clinic.  Children and young adults are admitted in the Child Clinic for educational, physical and Social rehabilitation and the parents and guardians of the students have always been impressed with this service.
