ABOUT US

Preamble

The School of Secondary Education, Languages Programmes was one of the Seven (7) Schools approved by National Commission for Colleges of Education in Nigeria, which fashioned it’s programme along the College Philosophy.  From inception the School of Secondary Education Language Programmes was formerly a departmental Component of the School of Arts that consisted the Department of Christian Religious Studies, Islamic Studies, Social Studies, Nigerian Languages and English Language.

Consequently upon the reorganization by National Commission for Colleges of Education in Nigeria, the School got it’s Autonomy in the year 1993 and became a full fledged school it’s started with two department viz English and Yoruba Departments. Arabic Language Department was pulled out  from Islamic study Department.  Also in the year 1993, Hausa and Igbo Departments were approved by National Commission for Colleges of Education in Nigeria and French Language Department was established in the year 1998.

At present, the School has just moved to a newly built complex with five Functional Departments namely  Arabic Language, English Language, French Language, Hausa Language and Yoruba Language Departments. Owing to none availability of students in Igbo Language Department, the Department has been temporarily close down.

 

               

    

 

The school has Dr. (Mrs.) O. O Owoeye as the pioneer Dean, between 1994-1997. Others who have served as Dean include Mr. W. O. Fatokun, Mr. Ndudim Chiegonu, Mr. R. F. Buari, Mr. O. A. Idowu while Mrs. M. A. Abimbola is the incumbent Dean as at the time of this compilation.

The school pride itself with well trained personnel, two well equipped standard Language Laboratories, Resource room, Museum, Library and standard classrooms.

The school also runs degree programme in English and French Languages. 

FUNCTION OF THE SCHOOL

Aside fashioning the philosophy of the School along with that of the College. The school has these sets of goals of teaching Languages and literatures.

(a)         To prepare students to perform competently in spoken and written form of their chosen languages.

(b)         To expose them to the literature of their chosen languages.

(c)         To prepare them as competent teachers of their chosen Language and literatures in primary and junior secondary schools.

(d)         To prepare them for further studies in these languages.

 

NOTABLE ACHIEVEMENTS

The school had produced highly skill manpower that are excelling in their chosen profession.

The School also had to it’s credits three (3) books namely,

(i)           General Introduction to language and literature published in 2002 and Edited by Mr. W. O. Fatokun and Mr. G. O. Osunketan.

(ii)          Language, literature and good governance:  the Nigerian experience. Published in 2007 and Edited by Mr. F. R. Buari and E. U. Alilonu.

(iii)        Topics in language and literature for peace, security and development in Nigeria published in 2013 and edited by Mr. O. A. Idowu, A. M. Surakat, G. O. Osunkentan, E. O. Olabode.

As at the time of compiling this report the fourth book  is about to be produced.

The school have a functional journal called OJOLA, Oyo Journal of Language and Applied Linguistics, at present the journal is volume 3, number 2.

Aside the school’s journal Department of English who happened to be the first Department has to it’s credit a functional Journal called SPED JELLS the journal is in it’s 2nd volume.
