HISTORICAL BACKGROUND

Our Historical Background

Federal College of Education (Special), Oyo formerly known as Federal Advanced Teachers College (FATC) was established in 1977.  The College cares for the education of the able and students with special needs at the tertiary level and produces teachers to teach various students with special needs at the primary and post primary institutions and other organizations that are involved in the training of special needs students.  School of Secondary Education (Arts and Social Sciences Progammes), one of the Seven Schools of the College is being headed by the Dean who is both Academic and Administrative head.  The Dean however is administratively assisted by the School Officer with other Registry Staff of the School for efficient and effective discharge of administrative functions in the School.  The School was made up of ten (10) departments namely:- Cultural and Creative Arts, Christian Religious Studies, Economics, Geography, Islamic Religious Studies, Music, Social Studies, Theatre Arts, History, Political Science. Each department is headed by a Head officially referred to as Head of Department.

Structure of the School

School of Secondary Education (Arts and Social Sciences Programmes) is structurally arranged thus:

The Dean who is both the Academic and Administrative Head of the School.  He is assisted academically in the School by the Heads of department and at the same time assisted by the School Officer for the general, efficient and effective administration of the School.  The structural arrangement of the School descendingly extended to the lecturers, instructors and professional technical, administrative staff and clerical officers of the School.

Philosophy of the School

Man, his complex nature and the increasingly more complex society in which he lives and his relationship with the metaphysical world (expressed in myths and religions), have been interesting subject for investigation by scholars.  Using various instruments qualitative and quantitative (or a combination of both) the “Arts and Social Sciences” disciplines concern man, his society and his relationship with the metaphysical world.  The NCE Arts and Social Sciences Programmes seek to draw the teacher and his students to mutual dialogue about their collective realities.

 

GOAL

The goals of the Arts and Social Sciences programmes include the following:-

  1. To train NCE teachers of Arts and Social Sciences subjects who have the ability and capability of producing teachers of those subjects in the Primary and Junior Secondary classes in Nigeria.
  2. To assist the students in acquiring basic knowledge and values needed to enhance the equality of their lives and the life of the nation.
  3. To assist the students acquiring the spirit of self reliance, positive self image and balanced personality.
  4. To prepare students for life long Education.

SCHOOL ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT

The School of Secondary Education (Arts and Social Sciences Programme) values man in its      totality as a result of this all its disciplines concern man, his society and his relationship with the  metaphysical world.

Hence its programme seeks to equip teachers and students with moral dialogue about their   collective realities.

 The School had over the years organized series of academic Conferences annually in order to contribute its quota to the Academic uplift of the staff, students and the country at   large.

THE SCHOOL’S JOURNAL

Atiba journal of the School of Arts and Social Sciences has been the Journal that the School is financing.

 

ACCREDITATION EXERCISE

All departments in the School of Secondary Education (Arts and Social Sciences Programmes) undergo regularly Accreditation Exercise at scheduled time and were accredited accordingly.

 

HUMAN CAPACITY

The School is one of the leading teaching school in the college; presently the school consists several substantive lecturers, professional, technical and Administrative personnel who occupy various positions.

PROJECTED ACHIEVEMENT

The School is hoping that the construction of the proposed third phase of the School of Secondary Education (Arts and Social Sciences Programmes) complex would further enhance enabling academic environment for both staff and students of the College.
